Death of the King of Portugal.

After a lonir illness the Kiugr of Portugal died lat-t Saturday. His Majesty published in 1877 a translation into Portuguese of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." It was followed in 18S0 by a translation of tho " Merchant of Venice." In that year also His Majesty completed his translation into Portuguese of Shakespeare's " Hicliurd III." A second edition of the King's translation of "Hamlet" was issued in 1880. The iirwt edition was limited to 1000 copies, which His Majesty distributed emonjj his friends. Some unscrupulous publisher in Itio de Janeiro, however, struck oil' a cheap edition, which met with it very remunerative sale in the Brazilian capital. His Majesty, to prevent a repetition of this conduct, "made a present of tho copyright of the now edition of " Hamlet," and of his future translations of Sh.iko.-pere to ono of tho charitable asylums of Lisbon. His eldest son was married, in ISSG, to v daughter of the Comte do Paris.
