Fire.

What is happily an unusual sound broke tho stillnes.-i of the small hours this morning, and the fitful clanging of tho firu bell brought most people out of bed and into the streets to learn thscau.su of the alarm. It was about twenty iniuutts past '2 o'clock, and fortunately the weather was calm. A glare of li-rht was seen down Carlyle street, and the ho.-o-rcfls were quickly trundled at full speed to iho .»ceno of tho lire. Tno eniriue had bet-n run to a short distance down Tennyson street. Tho scene of the fire was at Mm P. Tirrell's boarding-house, and quickly as the Brigade wero en tho spot after the alarm had been given, it wus evident that she buiUUug was doomed. Tho fire, in fact, Imd got a strong hold of tho house before the inmates uncovered it, and consequently very littlo was caved, some of tho boarders, iiidned, only escaping in ttieir night clothes. The back part of tho house is very old, and was known as Blair's cottage. Some few years ago, when Mrs Brenton rented the plaeo, a considerable addition was mado to the building, by which it was converted into a commodious boarding house. It wns apparently in this part of the building, iv the front sitting-room, where the fire broke out, but the e:m-e could scarcely have been a defective chimney, for iho warmth of tho weather would not have r< quired the use of tin , fire-placo. It was more probably rats nibbling w«x mutches. The Brigade worked with a will, and thero being plenty of water, thu fire was prevented from communicating with the adjoining- buildings. Ihe housewas the property of Mr Kobjohns and v;ni* uninsured. The furniture was inBured for £30it in the Now Zealand office.
