REEFTON.

December 12,

The town of Reefton had a narrow escape from total destruction by fire yesterday. Bush fires surrounded the town, and fanned by a strong gale of wind tbe flames invaded the houses. The Catholic school, survey office, and Courthouse repeatedly caught fire, but the entire population turned out, and the flames were extinguished. After five hours' incessant labor the fire was driven back. A house in Bridge-street, opposite the Bank of New Zealand, caught fire, but fortunately the flames were put out by wrecking the building. A shower of live sparks rained upon the town for hours, but the roofs of the bouses were all manned and tbe spread of the fire prevented. The escape of the town was truly providential.
