CORRESPONDENCE.

PAmphlbt pro PitovlfterA&sM.— Mr. W. E.« Sadler write* npdn. 'this ''subject. He aa^a :—"I: — "I greatly liked your elaborate criticismjp yesterday's 9119 11 ? 1 ? 3 t°* r /, pamphlet on Jfyovjuoialisra, although. I cbul<| possibly some few ,ot the jsentsnces thereof. Of course) you are, plainly wrong as to eight Provincial Governments, eight Executive^ &c. Wo have nine Par. 1 liainentary Governments'; *nd, oVer-arching all, one General Government. But that small error of quantity is of but very ■mall >* account. Surely , eight , , Parliamentary Governments, for thia •xtremely ■sparse "population' are enough to - engage any jstpiible public-spirited,, man in, opposiv© criticism," Mr. Sadler claims to nave been one of the first to oppose provincialism.' H« l thinks ' -road .boards and town councils completely supersede < ,the neqwajty for continuing Provincial Councils, iHe believes, however, th»t in less than two years the separation of two islands wili> be deemed advisable/; Mr. Sadler, in endeavouring to correct ni, has himself fallen into what he terms' an "error ,of quantity." He forgets that Southland has now ceased to exist as a province, j hjaving b«en' incorporated with Otagoi The 'Qounty of Westland is n»t a Parliamentary Government, and, therefore, our statement 'that there are eight Provincial Governments is literally correct. ' "Progress" aayai -""I hate read with much interest the various letters which have appeared in the- Cross upon the subject of the Waikato Railway, not the least striking of which is one signed 'A. McDonald, PukeI kohe '' Valley Farm.' That gentleman leads offinhis usualjbold style— lays all the blame at the dopr of the Gineral; Government for allowing the Waikato settlers to have a vjoice in the matter. I maintain the Waikato settlers, should have the preference of any other settlements, as it » principally the Waikato the Government have* id Mew to make the line pay. I can sympathise with Mr. McDonald if he ha? been victimised by purchasing allotments in the township of Tuakau. It is a great pity that the gentlemen who purchased land at Tuakau can have no legal redress .again'at the Go'vernmerit for obtaining money under false pretences, as Mr. McDonald states they have. It is a lame excuse to ask the line to be taken five or six miles of a longer route simply because the Government proposed, that line seven years ago. If the then Government made a mistake, that is no reason why the present Government should carry out a work which], be a loss to the province simply' to benefit a few landowner*; The railway must have its advantages and disadvantages to the various settlers residing along the line, but the Government I have no doubt will act impartially in the matter, and construct the cheapest and best line independent of the wishes of Mr. McDonald, the worthy Dr., Mr. Walker, or Mr. Rutherford, who have all expressed their views on ! the subject. l I ' quite agree with Mr; Rutherford in wishing t» see the best routa adopted, and hope that the Waikato railway will not bo a spoilt job like the Great South Road from near Drury to Pokeno, which is a lasting disgrace to the district. If the Government were to procure the services of a disinterested gentleman like Mr. O'Neill, who has proved his competency on railway matters in ( the Southern provinces, and take ' into consideration his opinion on the two lines now proposed, it would at once set the matter at rest. In justice to the Waikato settlers, the line proposed by Mr. •Gwynneth should at least have a fair trial."
