A CASE FOR THE POLICE.

On Sunday afternoon, three of the servants of the Auckland Hotel started for Onehunga in a buggy, and as they neared Onehunga were met by two horsemen riding at a. furious pace. The Jehus passed the buggy, one on each side, and frightened the horse, | which bolted. The driver, in his efforts to pull in hi* horse, was thrown from his seat reins in hand, and for some distance was dragged along the road. He ultimately had to relinquish his hold of them, and the horse was JLhus under no restraint. One of the occupants of the buggy tried to reach forward and secure a hold of the reins, but in his effort to do so was thrown on the ground amongst the horse's feet, and one of the wheels of the buggy passed over the upper part of his body. The other occupant, being a woman, took the matter philosophically, and retained her seat. As the horse entered the village a number of men barred its progress, and thus checked its headlong career. Dr. Tennant was called in to attend upon the injured persons, but we are glad to say no serious injury has been sustained. The practice of riding at a furious pace on the roada in tie neighbourhood of Auckland, especially on Sundays and holidays, is no uncommon thing, and we hope the police will succeed in hunting down those in this instance who were the cause of the accident. If such offences were visited with the full penalty of the Police Act— £lo, or an alternative of three months' imprisonment with hard labour — there can bo no doubt that the evil habit would soon cease to exist.
