A meeting of the Volunteer Ball Committee was held last night in the Strangers' Room of the Northern Club, at half-paat 7 o'clock. Major Heaphy, V.C., in the chair. There was a^- large attendance of members. The tender of Mr. W. J. Marks, for fitting up gaseliers, &c, in the various side rooms and lobby of the ball-room, was accepted. It was resolved to send an invitation to Colonel Harington, soliciting his attendance at the ball, and desiring him to secure the presence of all the representatives at the Colonial prize firing— 47 Volunteers of all ranks, and 17 Cadets — in all 64.— 1n answer to the Chairman, Lieutenant Isaacs stated that the sub-committee had waited upon the two brass bands ; that the Artillery band wanted to be paid for their services, but that the Rifle baud had offered their services gratuitously, which offer had been accepted. — The secretary, Lieutenant Snell, was instructed to write to Colonel Harington, informing him that the Ball Committee had incurred an expenditure of £50 in erecting the platform along the centre of th» Drill-shed, and, as it would be a permanent improvement to the building, to solicit him to endeavour to get the General Government to recoup th<.m this amount. Various members of the committee thought that, as the repairs to the roof of the Drillshed were also permanent impiovctncnts, the General Government should be asked through Colonel Harington to bear the expense of them.— After various matters of detail had been transacted, the usual votes of thanks closed the meeting.
