HOWICK TROOP ROYAL CAVALRY VOLUNTEERS.

The monthly inspection of the above troop took place yesterday afternoon at Pigeon Mountain. Captain Maclean, Lieutenant Roberts, Cornet Hill, Assistant-Surgeon Hovell, and about twenty non-commissioned officers and troopers were present. The drill was under the direction of Lieutenant Snell, the Government instructor. The troop was was put through several formations, and the sword exercise at the halt and on the move, both done very satisfactorily. We are glad to see that some interest is being taken by the num themselves ; and, if they only continue in their present course, the Government may rely on having at least <>ne good troop of cavalry. We do not say this in any disparagement of the other troops, as we are well aware a better feeling and more energy is being shown by all ; but we find that praise, when deserved, given to one body, is an incentive to excel in the others We feel sure that if more esprit de corps were shown by all the various Volunteer corps it would be to their mutual advantage. We are informed that Lieutenant Snell has offered to give an extra drill — dismounted — once monthly. ' This will be a boon to the corps, and we trust the members will view it in a proper light, and avail themselves of the opportunity.
