November 21 : With Mr. Thomson's road engine, recently imported, Mr. Gillies made a successful trial on Saturday. — The cmshinga at. Conroys Gully reefs are vety favourable* — At tho Council to-day, a motion for a qouferenoe to arrange basis of union with Canterbury was tabled ; also, a motion recommending provision for volunteer extended fira brigades, — Mr. Macassey addressed the electors on Friday. — A. volunteer company has i been started at Itfaseby. The volunteers in I the province aie now nearly 1,100 strong.
