THE THAMES ELECTION: DECLARATION OF THE POLL.
At tone o'clock on Saturday afternoon Captain Symonds officially declared the poll at the Conrfc-house, Shortland. The announcement ot Dr. Sara's return was received with cheers. Dr. Sam then came forward, and after thanking the electors said : The measured I have hitherto enunciated on several oocasions shall have my utmost attention, namely : To obtain public works on the goldfiold, reduction of gold duty, reduction of miners' rights, the abolition of the triplicate miners' rights, the advocacy of causing water supply to be produced for domestic ami mining purposes, the making tracks or tramwaye throughout the peninsula to enable miners and others to travel over that peninsula from Cape Colville to the Aroha, Kaitakitaki,andTauranga, extending over nearly a million acres of valuable land, and assumed to be highly auriferous, that the gold now hidden may be brought to light, and so benefit our fellow men. 1 shall endeavour to obtam large public reserves for the purposes of education, hospital*, and other charitable institutions ; and shall use my exertions to impress upon the Government the importance of acquiring from the native owners the freehold ot this goldtield, so that the present, European and native difficulty may be set at rest, and the heartburnings and differences which exist between both races brought to a close.— The Doctor also made some remarks respecting the opposition he had experienced from a portion of the Press, but said he was content to take the public verdict on the matter, as indicated by his election.
