MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL Daily Southern Cross Office, Friday evening.

The amount of business which has been transacted during the past week either privately or by auction has been exceedingly trifling, and we have no changes in value of goods to note. Quotations remain to a great extent nominal, there being but few buyers in the market. "We understand that the affairs of Mr. H. S. Meyers, who recently suspended operations, nave been arranged to the satisfaction of those interested, which we consider should have a salutary influence on commercial matters generally. We notice the arrival of a shipment of Hawaiian sugar per s.s. 'Wonga Wonga,' which has been sent to test our market. The majority of the samples are suitable for the trade, and, if it can be laid down at prices to compare favourably •with the product of Java and Mauritius, we shall doubtless have a large trade with these islands in the staple. Maize at the moment is scarce, and would fetch 5s 3d to 5s 6d per bushel in wholesale parcels. Oats remain as last quoted. Kauri gum may be quoted at 301. to 38Z. per ton, according to quality. For flax, the demand is limited, fh-st quality being worth £20 per ton. Candles remain without change of quotations. Belmonts, 11 id; other brands, full weights, lower.
