DUKE OF EDINBURGH THEATRE.

Me. J. Hooper took liia benefit at the above theatre last evening, when the drama of " Honesty the J3est Policy" was produced. We were sorry, however, to see such a small house, as, although certainly never cut out for an actor, Mr. Hooper has earned for himself at least the reputation of being hard-working and careful in the preparation of his parts. The piece passed ofF very fairly, and was followed by a terpsichorean interlude, during which a double jig was given in excellent style by Messrs. Chambers and Hooper, and Miss Maggie Knight gave one of her favourite pas seuls, in an exceedingly graceful manner. Indeed this young danseiise is becoming a great favourite with the theatre-going portion of the public, and is nightly encored. The performance concluded with a laughable farce. We notice that extensive preparations are being made for the exhibition of " Pepper's Ghost," which is an. nounced for to-morrow night, and, as it is something of a novelty in Auckland, we have no doubt it will attract good audiences for several nights, if properly carried out. Mr. J. Chambers, well known in connection with the Nathan Troupe, and the leading low comedian of the present company, will take his benefit this evening, when he will appear as Coddles, in the play of " The Bottle."
