THE LATE MEETING AT THE THAMES.
To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross. gn^ — o n a perusal of your journal of the 4th insfc., I find that your correspondent nt the Thames has, in the course of his report of the public meeting held in Butt's Theatre, Shortland, stated that "Mr. Matthews's amendment was put and lost, amid hisses and yells of disapprobation." This is untrue. The amendment was not put to the meeting, consequently it could not be "lost." Instead of being received with yells and hisses, it was in the first instance seconded by five or six different persons ; but the C hairman refused to accept it as an amendm^nt, and T had to postpone its consideration as a. substantive motion. About »n hour afterwards I wi-hed to withdraw it, but the Chairman had the discourtesy to refuse this. On its being put to the meeting whether I should be allowed to withdraw my motion, it was carried by a majority that I should, and it was withdrawn. I trust that you will not refuse insertion of the above. — I am, &c, Bichard Matthews. Auckland, June 6, 1867.
