DRURY. PROPOSED AUXILIARY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM ALLIANCE FOR DRURY DISTRICT. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
June 5. A meeting was held on Thursday at the Presbyterian Church, Drurj, in connection 'with the above Association, Mr. "W. Kerr in the chair. The meeting was opened by singing.. The Rev. Mr. Ecclea then engaged in prayer, after which The Chairman, in his opening remarks, said many persons did not yet understand what was meant by the United Kingdom Alliance : he therefore gave an explanation of the origin, aims, and operations of tbeUuited Kingdom Alliance. The committee of the proposed Auxiliary had forwarded an application to the parent Society to be acknowledged as an Auxiliary, with a view to the introduction of the agitation of the question of suppressing the liquor traffic in the colony, and to assist by pecuniary contributions. The subject was one that he felt sure would recommend itself to every well-wisher of his species, peeing that the same evil amongst vis produced the same dire results. The universal experience of mankind proved that where the liquor traffic existed the evils so graphicilly portrayed in the columns of the Alliance ffeios, the organ of the United Kingdom Alliance (extracts from which would re read by the secretary that evening), were to be found. He would not detain them any longer, but beg to call upon the SecreThe Secretary (Dr. Bayner) then read various and copious extracts from the paper referred to. A t the close of the meeting several persons present paid their subscriptions to entitle them to membership. The subscriptions are from one shilling upwards. A vote of thanks w»s passed to the chairman, Mr. Eccles pronounced the benediction, and the meeting broke up.
