(FROM THE "ADVERTISER," JUNE 6.)

A oowardly robbery -was committed in the bush off the Karaka yesterday, from the person of a youth who was delivering bread to the claims. \t appears that, as the youth approached a lonely part of the track, he was seized by a man who rifled his pockets of their contents — a half-crown and some coppers— and. took with him six loaves of bread. The boy, it appears, ran away from the ruffian as soon as he could, and is unable to identify him. The New South Wales Bank have at length determined upon the establishment of a branch at Shortland, and call for tenders for the erection of a building in accordance with plans at this office. We are glad to find they are now entering upon the work with spirit, and in a few weeks will have a building ereoted superior in every respect to those banks at present doing bn sin ess_ here. The site iR a corner allotment, with frontages to Pollen and Richmond-streets, and opposite the Reefer*' Arms Hotel. The main front of the boiling will extend forty-six feet to Pollen-strpet, with a gable of nine feet, or almost; twice the size of the present banking premises in Shortland. There will be smelting and assaying premises attached, with a panpage leading from the barking room to the smelting rooms. The banking room will be 28 feet by 28 feet, containing ornamental counters for money and gold transactions, desks screens, and other conveniences of a banking establishment. The gold and as^ay-rooms at the sides are to be 15 feet by 20 feet, 15 feet by 12 feet 6 inchen, and 12 feet 9 inches by 12 feet 6 inches. There will be four windows to Pollen-street and two to Richmond-street. The main entrance will be highly ornamented with a 12panelled sunk moulded door, with raised moulded centres and bolection moulding round. The building will contain a subst»ntial brick chimney and two fireplaces, and will be enclosed with a 6-feet fence. The work is to be completed by the 27th proximo, in readiness to be handed over to the mannger. Mr. Rumsey, of Auckland, is the architect, and the plans reflect credit on that gentleman's professional skill.
