SYDNEY.
The Empire of May 1 reports :—: — Since the departure of the mail vifc Suez, on the 24th ult., business has been virtually suspended, in consequence of the uninterrupted inclemency of the weather. Transactions have been confined almost exclusively to a limited town trade demand. For more than a week it has been impossible for ships in harbour to make any progress in the discharge of their cargoes, and the despatch of goods to the oountry districts has in like manner been prevented by the incessant heavy raini. Unless we have an early change in the weather, we fear that we shall have to record another series of the disastrous floods which have sojfrequently desolated the agricultural districts of this oolony. With respect to our market for imported goods generally, we have no change tojnotice during the few days which have elapsed since the publication of our monthly summary j but there are a few articles of special interest to American correspondents, which it is desirable to notice. Breadstuff's : There is now no foreign wheat in Sydney, and stocks of Californian and .Chilian flour ' are almost exhausted ; but the market has been freely supplied from Adelaide and other South Australian ports. Since the departure of the mail, per ' Rakaia,' prices have somewhat improved. The present prices of Adelaide first brands are £13 to £13 10s per ton for flour ; and 5s Id to 5s 2d for good to prime samples of wheat ; for Chilian and Ualifornian, in the absence of Btocks, we are unable to give quotations. Kerosine Oil : Notwithstanding the large consumption, and the prospect of an increased demand during the approaching winter season, the supply has been sufficient to cause a continued downward tendency in the market. Present quotations for best brands in American oil do not exceed 3s to 4d to 3s 5d per gallon, in small trade parcels, and probably 38 3d would be the highest price obtainable for a parcel of any considerable quantity. Kerosine lamps are quite a drug in the market, and do not command prices anything approaching the cost of importation. Coals : The price at all the staiths continues at 9s 3d per ton ; and 14s 2d per ton if shipped in Sydney. During the month, the vessels chartered for San Francisco are the ' Page,' at 235 ; the 'Windward,' and 'Ann Sanderson,' at 14s. The ' Douglas ' loads on owner's account.
