SUBSTANTIAL GAIN IN VOSGES

Operations In West (Received October 19, -.35 a.m.) LONDON, October 18. Today’s communique from supreme headquarters (reporting on yesterday's fighting) says: “xVlied units in the Schelde pocket reached the area of Ijzeudjikc. North of the town we advanced westward about one mile, and good progress was also made further south. Fighter-bombers supported our ground forces, which repulsed counter-attacks against the neck of the South Beveland peninsula. Escorted heavy bombers, none of which is missing, attacked sea dykes) at Westkappelle on Walcheren Island. Fighter-bombers on the Breskenj sector hit supply dumps, strongpoints and road transport. Our forces reached the outskirts ot Venray where heavy fighting continues. Our units in another thrust south-west-ward crossed the Venray-Deurne road. Fighter-bombers bit railway targets over a wide area in Holland and western Germany. Attacks were made in the areas of Venloo aud Keinpen, east of the Dutch salient, Neuss Badkreuznach, Bellliein and Rheinzabern in the Rhineland, and Munster. Our troops are mopping up north-east of Aachen, and maintaining their lines completely encircling the . city, where house-to-house fighting continues. Northwest qf Aachen we mopped up segments of the Siegfried Line. ■ Fighting, in the Moselle Valley continues at Maizieres les Metz. „ “Our troops in the Vosges foothills in spite of stubborn resistance, and in several areas strong counter-attacks made a substantial advance just south of Bruyeres road junction and north-east of le Thillot. Hard fighting continues in both areas. We have taken the village of Laval near Bruyeres. Counter-attacks were repulsed ou the Luncville-Epinal sector.” .
