BEST GALLOPERS AT TE RAPA
Dominion Special Service. HAMILTON, October 17. At Te Rapa this morning the course proper, 50ft. out from the rails, was available for candidates with engagements at the Labour Day meeting at Cambridge. Several useful efforts were recorded. The best over five furlongs was that of Royal Pilot, and Te Awe Awe and Neenah took the honours over six furlongs. The going was in good order. Te Awe Awe and Neenah ran six furlongs in 1.21, coming home the final halfmile in 50. Full Hand, after running his opening half-mile in 55 3-5, got to the end Of n round in 2.13. He looks well. The best five furlongs of the morning was credited to Royal Pilot, who accounted for Lagenia in .1.6 1-5. Quimition (Amuusdeu) wtm schooled over three hurdles and acquitted himself well. Jewel Cape (Ensor) and Sir Inness (Haves) lumped the two hurdles down the back safely and Water Flight (Ensor) accomplished a similar task. Riding engagements for the Waikato Hunt include: —A. Forbes, Gold Land, Cornaro; C. B. Goutabro, Brown Night, Royal Mush. C. L. Goulsbro, who has arrived back from the Pacific, hopes to be riding at the Waikato Hunt on Labour Day. M. J. Carrol has been appointed course caretaker at Te Rapa and will take up his new duties ou November 1. Carroll has been a public trainer for about 20 years, some of the best horses to pass through his hands being I’aganelll, Sir Bernard. Alfort, Raceful, King Merv, Whetauui. Tosh, iMacroom, and Bougbal. Mr. T. Wilcox, who has been caretaker since the Te Rapa course was formed, has resigned as a result of ill-health.
A further instance of cargo pillaging has come to light in connexion with a shipment of watches to Dunedin. _ The watches were dispatched from Switzerland in November last and had just arrived after a long voyage, including many wide-spread ports of call, the last being Sydney. After a period in bond in Hint city the consignment arrived in Dunedin this week. The. top of one case was nearly off, but its contents were intact. When the other cases were opened, however, it was found that 60 watches were tnissuiz.
