TRENTHAM WORK

Handicap Horses Run A Mile

(By

St. Simon.)

The only visitors to work at Trentham yesterday were Lord Thelo, Delano, Typhoon and Bunsby. It was a quiet morning, most of the horses being let off with pace lAork and there were few fast gallops. The weather was showery and foggy and the outside' trial grass, where all the work was done, was wet and greasy. CTamond Bay, with Lord Thelo as a companion, galloped seven furlongs in 1.32, the first three furlongs in 38 and the last half mile in 54. Cramond Bay, who is troubled with occasional bouts of soreness, appreciated the conditions and hit out more freely than he nas been doing in his recent work. He will be ridden in the Shorts Handicap on Saturday by A. G. Waddell. For a hack just out of maidens Lord Theio made a good showing. He will contest the October Handicap one mile, and will be ridden by T. Green who won on him at Otakl.

Flahuluk (Vaughan), Voltaire (Johnson) and Macedoine (Stokes) were sent a mile. None was anxious to make the pace and it took 56 4-5 to run the first half mile. They did better over the concluding stages coming home the last half in 52 1-5, and finishing together, the time 'for the full distance being 1.49. Flahuluk will be ridden in the Wellington Handicap by Vaughan, who won the Parliamentary Handicap on him in July. He looks well and his prospects this week will be improved if the track is soft. Bridge Acre, a Guineas®candidatc, ran the last five of six furlongs in 1.5 J, the last half mile in 52 1-5. She gave Hine Rei two lengths’ start, but soon picked her up and beat her home by several lengths. Bridge Acre will be ridden in Lbe Guineas by Wiggins. She has not raced since she won the C.J.C. Challenge Stakes last Easter. As she did not winter well she was late coming into work for her spring preparation, but has thrived lately and has built up into a compact filly. Al-Sirat, a two-year-old full brother to Bridge Acre, had Foxella for a companion over half a mile, which they ran in 51-J. Al-Sirat will have his first race in the Wellesley Stakes ■ in which he will be ridden by A. Jenkins. He is an attractive colt for whom 1600 guineas was paid atthe January sales and he has not been hurried. Tara King, who is favourite for the Wainui Handicap, going alone, strode along from the mile to the half mile, where he increased the pace and came home in 53 4-5. He relished the conditions and hit out boldly. Tuis, ridden by her trainer, W. Bryce, and Big Money (Garth) ran an easy five furlongs, coming home the last half mile in 55. Tuis is a three-year-old half-sister by Revelation to Bridgehead, owned by the Bombay sportsman, Mr. F. H. Mehta, and has had only one race to date. Big Money, unluckily beaten in his only shirt at Otaki recently, is in the Guineas and also claims an engagement in the Trial Plate on the second day.

Court Judge and Supreme ran half a mile in 55, and Manutere, going alone, ran 54 4-5 for the same distance. Black Simon, a w’lnner at Masterton, ran a mile in 1.52. He was assisted over the last five furlongs by the maiden Allisloper (Salmagundi—Pebble Beach), Who ran his last half in 55 and. finished well. Yesterday’s Arrivals. Arrivals yesterday included Siglow, Yogi, Koi Ragi, Ramicourt, Kindergarten, Golden Souvenir, Magnus Lux, Master Gary, Daniel Haigh, Capronella, Da Vinci, Boulder Dam, Lambourn and Grand Coulee. Master Ted, Tillox, Representative aud Lord Chancellor are due today from Auckland and the first batch of South Islanders is due by the steamer express this morn, Ing. Latest Scratchings.

Scratchings for the Wellington meeting received up to last evening were:— Wellesley Stakes: Balcherrie, Raciila. Wainui Handicap: Findon. Guineas: Wave On, Air Lord. Wellington Handicap: Battledress (11.35 a.m. yesterday). Shorts Handicap: Verdant. October Handicap: Spirillum. All engagements: Te Ranui. Quick Recovery. Hormuz, the 1400gns. Ifoxbridge—Rippling Waters colt, who pulled up very lame and appeared to have broken down badly when finishing second in the maiden at Masterton, has made a remarkable recovery. He was on the track at Trentham yesterday and was given pacework with his trainer, W. Bryce, iu the saddle. He moved short at first, but reached out better when worked up. Bryee thinks the horse ricked himself or struck a nerve on Saturday. It is too early yet to say whether he is 'thoroughly sound again. Broughton’s Rides. W. J. Broughton has been engaged to ride Tara King, Whackie, Majestic, Beau Cheval, Financial and Magnus Lux on the opening day of the Wellington spring meeting. A Highlight of Racing. It may be the good fortune of the Wellington Racing Club to stage at Trentham on Monday a meeting between Kindergarten and Lord Chancellor at weight-for-age. Kindergarten reached Trentham yesterday and Lord Chancellor is expected to arrive from Auckland today along with other members of F. Smith’s team. With Kindergarten practically reserved for weight-for-age racing. Lord Chancellor is rated the Dominion’s No. 1 handicap horse, and a clash between these two great horses at even weights under the staudard scale over 11 furlongs should prove one of the greatest Turf attractions of the season. Kindergarten has not raced since the Wellington Cup in January, but twice in the last two weeks he has given exhibition gallops at Hastings and Masterton. He appeared to be feeling the firm ground at Hastings, but he galloped much more freely at Opaki on Saturday where the ground was easy and well turfed. Whether he is as good today as he was prior to the hard tracks affecting him last summer remains to be proved by performance. Lord Chancellor is probably the only horse to have raced in the Dominion during Kindergarten’s reign who is rated class enough to make a match with the champion. Not for Trentham.

Black Plato was withdrawn last evening from the Shorts Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. He suffered a slight foot injury at the weekend. If recovered he will race at the Waverley meeting on Monday. Foxleap Impresses. One of the best workers at Biccarton yesterday was Foxleap, who is engaged in the Wellington Handicap In which she will be ridden by B. Markwlck. Foxleap was third in the Islington Handicap at Biccarton in August to Kevin and Arabian Night, and for some time has been regarded as a mare likely to make good in first-grade handicaps. She is at her best when the sting is out of the ground, conditions she may experience at Trentham on Saturday. High-Priced Colt. . , „ According to the Melbourne writer “Cardigan” one of the most attractive youngsters at Caulfield is the colt by Foxbridge from Administration. The colt is a haltbrother to the good New Zealand performer Lord Chancellor. He is owned by Mr. J. Wren, for whom he was purchased at the yearling sales at Trentham in January for 2000gns., and he is being trained by D. McNamara. The name of Anstey has been granted for the colt and he has been named after the late Mr. Frank AnHtey, orator and administrator, who was a great friend of Mr. Wren. Anstey was broken in and handled at Brentwood by P. Spratt before he left for Australia.
