More Money For Deferred Maintenance An explanation of an increase of •£673,350 in the vote for the Working Railways .Account from £11,719,569 expended last year to an estimate of £12,392,919 required this year, was sought from the Minister of Railways, Mr. Semple, when the Railways Department estimates were discussed in the House yesterday. Mr. Gillspie (Opposition, Hurunui) asked why the Minister wanted nearly £700,000 more, when according to the Railways Statement recently tabled, it. was expected that the present abnormal triiflic would not be maintained after the war. He also asked why statements on the earnings of individual lines were no longer provided. The Minister said that the increased vote was to provide for maintenance delayed by war conditions. Because of the shortage of labour and, materials maintenance of the tracks, buildings and rolling stock had had to be deferred and would now be provided for.
