SUBSIDY ON LIME
Au inquiry when it was intended to implement the findings of the Lime Commission which sat before the war was made by Mr. Holyoake (Opposition, Pahiatua) during consideration of the estimates of the Department of Agriculture in the House last night. He said that some portion-,of the subsidy for the carriage.of lime on the railways should be set aside for the carriage of lime by motor-truck in districts not served by rail. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Roberts, said he was sympathetically disposed to an alteration in the subsidy and in the national development plan this question was being closely considered. A part of the subsidy could not be shifted to apply to lime carried in lorries while there was such a great shortage of petrol ji’ld t.vrcs.
