BLITZED DUISBURG
Great Extent Of Damage
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 16. Very heavy damage across the whole industrial area occupied by Duisburg and satellite towns was caused by the R.A.F. Bomber Command’s attacks during the last, few days. From Hamboyn, in the north, all the way to Wanheimcr Ort, in the south, factories are smashed and railway tracks and warehouses and dockside and railside buildings are gutted or wrecked by high-explosives. Smoke covers the greater part of the largest inland harbour in Europe, and fires were still burning yesterday at many other points, with heavy smoke over most of the town. Reconnaissance photographs of Cologne taken after the daylight attacks by United States heavy bombers on October 14 show considerable industrial damage and that railway lines have been severed throughout the city. Cologne was hit by nearly 5000 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiaries within 24 hours. The German news agency stated that American “terror raiders” bombed today the city area of Salzburg, near Hitler’s mountain eyrie at Berchtesgaden. Moscow states that long-range bombers of the Red Air Force last night made a large-scale raid on the railway junction of Instcrburg. Three military trains were blown up.
