Grocery Trade Classes
That some members of the grocery - trade are interested-in obtaining special- - ized training to fit them to become more efficient in the, trade was evidenced at a meeting of both junior and senior members bold in tlie Oddfellows* Hall, Clyde Quay, YVellington. The meeting, which was arranged by the YVellington Master Grocers’ Association, was open to alt members ot’ the Staffs of firms associated with it in order that they might hear something of tlie proposed technical training classes which are to start in the New Year,at both the Wellington Technical College and the Hutt Y’altey Memorial Technical College. The meeting was presided over by Mr. H. A. Fanselow, president of the association, an<i the proposed syllabus of subjects and the arrangements for classes were explained by the chairman of'the staff training committee. A complete course will ' cover from three to four years, though older who /have had secondary school education tvould probably need to take some of the more advanced subjects only. Included in the . course will -bo such subjects as business arithmetic, English and correspondence, elementary bookkeeping, salesmanshrp, ticket-writing, window-dressing, business methods and organization associated with commercial life, and grocery practice, the last-named subject covering n knowledge of provisions and groceries, the geography aud origin of commodities. , identifications, storage aud production of such goods, manufacture aud marketing, together with all selling points for dis- - tribution to tho public. A general knowledge of such things as advertising, food values, use of scales and weights and loss affecting them, care and upkeep of plant and equipment, is included. After a course of study, a student would have specialized knowledge to enable him to carry out efficiently the duties of a qualified senior assistant, branch manager or an executive officer. During the evening Mr. R. . Fraser, Assistant Director of 'Marketing, gave a talk on “YVorld Food Supplies.” Two films, "A World of Plenty” and "Know Your Ally—Britain,” were shown by Mr.. P. Whitchurch.'
