YIELDS OF GRAIN

Estimates For This Season

. Estimates of the average yields an acre of wheat, oats and barley for the 1940-44 season are published in this week’s Gazette. They are as follows North Island, 34 bushels of wheat, 34 bushels ot oats and 38 -bushels of barley; Marlborough, 30, 32, 32; Nelson, 19, 23. 23; Canterbury, 30. 40, 33; Otago, 37, 44, 40; Southland 38, 53, 41. The average (eistimated) for the Dominion is 31 bushels of wheat, 43 bushels of oats, and 34 bushels of barley. ■ Last season’s actual average yields were: Wheat 34.21 bushels, oats 49.J0 bushels, barley 36.91 bushels. In accordance with Hie above estimates the total yield of wheat for the 1943-44 season should be approximately 7,(00,000 bushels, as against an ascertained yield of 9,819,342 bushels for the 1942-43 season. The area from which oats were threshed for the five seasons ending with 1942-43 averaged 22 per cent, of the total area under that crop. Assuming that a similar proportion is threshed this year the total yield of grain would be approximately 2,100.000 bushels, as against a yield of 2,808,774 bushels for the season 1942-43. On a similar assumption in regard to barley the total yield of grain would be approximately 1,120,000 bushels, as against 1,0u7,008 bushels for the 1942-43 season.
