Reinstatement Of Tram Employee

Dominion Special Service. AUCKLAND, February 10. The decision of the Auckland Manpower (Industrial) Committee allowing an appeal by a tramway motorman, E. IL Saxon, against his summary dismissal for permitting an American serviceman to drive hip tram early in January, was discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Transport Board, when n report on the committee’s hearing was received from the engineer and manager, •Mr. A. E. Ford. As the man’s action was contrary to the Tramways Amendment Act, 1910, be had been dismissed, said Mr. Ford, and the dismissal, had been endorsed by the manpower office lAdvice that the board had no alternative but to accent the committee's decision had been received from its solicitor, Mr. J. Stanton, the manager continued. Mr. Stanton had said that, as the regulations under which the board’s operation had been declared essential were statutory and were more recent than J lie Tramways Act. the right of employees to appeal to their own appeal board constituted under the Act was superseded by the provisions of 'he regulations concerning dismissal of essential workers. The chairman, Mr. W. H. Nagle, said that tramway running was so technical that it merited consideration by an appeal board which had been in operation since 'l9lO and which consisted of the senior magistrate of the city and one representative each of the board and the union. The matlfi called for further investigation and he would ask Mr. Stanton to report on Hie board’s full authority under the present regulations.
