IMPORT LICENSING
Increasing Effect On Retail Traders
"From the retail traders’ point of view the position is becoming increasingly serious,” said the president, Mr. IS . li. Ilindle, at Tuesday's meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, when import licensing came up for discussion. The eighth period schedule recently issued disclosed a great increase in prohibited anti controlled items, and this must have its effect on shopkeepers. . Several members gave examples of where British manufacturers had made offers ot goods that are needed here but for which import licences were either' refused or delayed so much that the offers expired before action could be taken. It was decided to ask members of the chamber to provide instances in their experience of where they thought the working of Hie import licence system acted against tlie best interests of the country and Io take whatever steps may be indicated as a result of tl>« inquiry.
