ARRESTED MARINES CONFESS

Attempted Taxi Robbery Two marines have been apprehended and confessions obtained in connexion with (he attempted robbery of a Wellington taxi-driver on Wednesday night, last week, . . Two hats left in the taxi, and iniormation furnished by a New Zealand airman enabled the U.S. military investigators to bring tlie men into custody within four days. The New Zealand airman said that about midnight on Wednesday lie talked with two luitless marines and during the conversation a certain surname was mentioned. However, it was discovered that 66 marines in this area had the same surname. Neither of the two hats left m the taxi after the attempted hold-up gave any identification of the marines who were wearing them. However, through use of these two leads and quick investigation by military authorities the two mon involved are now being held awaiting action of a military tribunal. . Mr. M. D. Rodden. 85 Tasman Street, a driver for Grey (Jabs, Ltd., whose shouts drove off tlie assailants before they could rob him, was unable positively to identity the two men. The attempted robbery took place itbout 10 p.m. at the corner of Aro and Norway Streets. Cuts ami brnises on the head were received by tlie taxi-driver. Both men stated that they determined on the robbery about ten minutes before catching the cal) aild that, though they had been drinking, they were uot intoxicated. Three other United States marines involved in local taxi hold-ups occurring about: a month ago are in custody, having been apprehended by marine investigators. .
