LOSS OF BRITISH CARRIER
H.M.S. Eagle Sunk In
Mediterranean U-BOAT ACTION
LONDON, August 12.
The Admiralty regrets to announce that the 22,000-ton aircraftcarrier H.M.S. Eagle has been lost as a result of U-boat action in the Mediterranean. A large number of the ship’s'company have been saved.
The Admiralty is able to announce that already at least one U-boat has been sunk in the area. The Eagle was originally, designed as a battleship for the Chilean Navy liefore the last war. In 1917 she was purchased by Great Britain and was finally completed as a carrier in 1924. She took part in the attack on the Italian Fleet at Taranto'in November, 1940.
