WAIKATO RACES

Bridegroom Scores Over

Country STREAMLINE’S HURDLES

King Rey Wins Principal

Flat Event

Dominion Special Service

HAMILTON. May 17. The first day of the Waikato Uacing Chib’s autumn meeting was held m line but overcast weather. The track was in excellent order, and the crowd l al 'S®' Totalizator investments were ia(,l,W. compared with £49,333/10/- last year. First Glimpse of Form. Showing his first glimpse of form, the four-vear-old, Pertinax. won at long odds in the Melville Hack and Hunters Steeplechase, for which Ureklaw and Ruling Star were the favourites. Clansman made the running till five, furlongs from home, when Sun Boy, lertmax, Makoi, and Ruling Star bunched m the lead. Crossing the brush fence into the straight, Ruling Star outjumped I ertinax, and they were left clear when Sun Boy and Mio Generale fell. Pertinax overtook Ruling Star at the last fence, and stayed on splendidly to score by four lengths from Ruling Star. Clansman battled on on to be a moderate third, and British Sovereign was fourth. Ruling Star was outstayed by a young improver, who should do still better. Favourite Scores. The Hastings-trained Battle Gain, who has raced very consistently, was made .au each-way favourite for the first division of the Otorohanga Hack Handicap, ami he dulv won. Beginning from No. 3, Battle Gain reached the front quickly, and was never afterward headed, running on strongly when the pressure was applied in the last furlong. The improving Harmony finished attractively for second after being a long way back, and Royal Pilot was a close third. Royal Pilot, Heroic Star, and Te Kaka were always prominent, and ran good races. Good Finishing Run. It was with a good finishing run on the rails that Streamline got up to defeat the favourite, The Dozer, in the Waikato Hurdles after being in a rearward position most of the way. Nithmount and Black .Musk set a solid pace from The Dozer,

who ran to the front nearing the home turn. Running to the last fence, of which the inside panel was down, The Dozer just led from Gold Spot, Master Appellant. Black Musk and Streamline. Gold Spot and Master Appellant collided, Master Appellant falling. Streamline then came through on the fence to win by three-quarters of a length from The Dozer. Donegal was four lengths away third, and Black Musk was fourth, followed by Inness Lud. Very Glad and Gold Spot. Master Appellant and Gold Spot would have played a prominent part in the finish only for the incident at the

last fence. Veteran’s Success. The veteran, King Rey, staged a return to winning form wheu he won the President’s Handicap, iu which he was previously successful as far back as 1935. King Key reached the front early and was never afterward headed, always being clear. In the straight, The Cardinal, after being a long way back till about five furlongs from home, finished fast on the outside for secondhand Du Mauriei also ran on for third. Kiicash was a very creditable fourth, succeeded by Erlick, Pocket Venus, anil Kentucky, who was awkwardly placed in the middle stages.

Bridegroom’s Steeplechase.

The Te Rapa Steeplechase was robbed of considerable interest when Riotous and Baldric, who were just behind the leadei, Bridegroom, fell at the second to last fence. Riotous was tiring at the time, having made all the running till headed at the top by Bridegroom, but Baidnc was going strongly and looked, lute h e . in » troublesome. After the mishap Bridegroom was the only one in it, and he won very decisively from Dozie Boy, <who fought on gamely. En Tour was a poor third and Smiling Thru’ was tourlh, followed by Floodlight, Simint and Conflagration. Aussie Ra was pulled up after hitting the first fence hard and. returned lame. Bridegroom was splendidly ridden by A. Jenkins and gave a fine display of jumping. Baldric was making up ground when he fell. Gar in front with Riotous when he fell about ‘ive furlongs from home. Circular Note Left. Wavin'' his first start since early in January. 0 the three-year-old Gold Money Song staged a return to form in wmnin o the Stewards’ Handicap, for which I'oxola and Circular Note were the favourites. Circular Note was hopelessly left at tin. start and the hopes of his s \ 1 Pb ortel ''; were immediately shattered.. Gold Money Song reached the front after about <l furlong from Farland and Lord Maitangi, •vid he was never afterward headed. Minning decisively. Foxola, who received a check at one stage, finished strongly tor second, and Lord Waitangi held on gamely for third. Gay Rosette, was a close fourth. Esquire Finishes \\ ell. Finishing strongly on the outside, Esquire won the Horotra Hack Handicap in good style. The positions changed a good deal in the first few furlongs, but Radiant Vaals gradually worked his way to the front and led into the straight fiom Esquire. Hinkler, Arctic Dawn .Aguilo and Flying Vixen. Below the distance Arctic Dawn came past the leaders and momentarily looked like winning, but Esquire ran on very strongly and was goin„ away just at the end.. Aguilo ran. on "ain“ly to be a good third, and Radiant Vaals was fourth, ahead of Justina, wno did not become prominent till near the mil. ... ~

Won All the Way. A. Jenkins scored his third riding success'of the day when he won the second division of tiie Otorohanga Hack Handicap on Biack Majesty, who was al double figures. In spite of the fact that he drew No. 15 at the barrier, Biack Majesty was soon in front, and he led throughout t score decisively from Paymaster, who was always well placed. Sweet Nothin., he’d on solidly in the straight for tJird. Ever England was not prominent early, hut lie was running on at the end.
