News And Notes From Town And Country

Soldiers’ Tea. Members of the Wellington branch of the Woodford House Old Girls’ Association, under the leadership of Mrs. J. 11. Hamilton Gilmer, were hostesses tit Sunday’s tea for soldiers at the Y.M.C.A., Wellington. Mr. J. M. A. Hott was in the chair, and was assisted by Mr. G. H. Scott. The programme comprised vocal solos by Mrs. Wilfred Andrews and Ena Rapley, accompanied by -Miss Finlay and Mrs. Anna Ginn; items by a Maori quartette; a vocal solo by W. J. McKinnon of the Royal Navy and an elocutionary item by Miss Nola Hyde. Speeches of appreciation were made by members of the various arms of the Fighting Services, and community singing was conducted by Mr. 11. Ilin die and Mr. J. White, with Mr. W. Mann at the piano.

Presentation To Helpers. At the annual concert of the Onslow Cricket Club on Friday night, Mrs. W. E. Webb and Miss Irma Webb were presented by the chib president, Mr. IV. H. Gledhill, with mementos in appreciation of their work for the club. They were in charge of -the afternoon tea arrangements for .the season.

Croquet at Paraparaumu. The Paraparaumq Croquet Club has just concluded its 1940-41 playing season, and trophies were presented to the winners of club competitions at the close of the final day’s play. The club championship was won by Mrs. Hardham, Mrs. Wise being the runner-up. The handicap singles competition was won by Mrs. Phipps, with Mrs. Hardham as runner-up. Mesdames Hardham and Phipps carried off the handicap doubles, Miss Petherick and Mrs. Hay being the runners-up. During the afternoon presentations were made by members to Mrs., Petherick, president, and Mrs. Wise, captain. Enjoyable interclub visits were exchanged during the season with Paekakariki, Otaki and Manakau. League of Mothers’ Meeting.

Mrs. D. Weddekin presided over the May meeting of the Moera-Waiwetu League of Mothers, and Mrs. E. Coventry-, secretary’ of .the Wellington Society for the Protection of Women and Children, addressed the meeting on the work of the society. The speaker was thanked for her talk. Five new members were received and an appeal was made for ditty bags. Miss P; Barclay gave, -songs, accompanied by Mrs. G. Stricklamr.

Address on Indian Women. A large attendance of members and friends was welcomed to the monthly meeting of th Masterton Townswomen's Guild by the president, Mrs. E. J. Burke. The speaker for the afternoon was Miss E. Hunt, Auckland, who gave members an insight into the conditions and customs prevailing in India, in the course of .4n address on •'The Women of India.” Miss Hunt stressed the. deeply religious nature of the great mass of the people, whose life in the main centred around religion. The speaker had studied conditions there on three occasions and she said that unlike Western woman, the trend of true womanhood in India was not toward masculinity but toward their own ordained sex. Townswomen in Lower Hutt. Miss V. Kettle presided over a good attendance of members at the May meeting of the Lower Hutt branch of the New Zealand Union of Townswomen's Guilds. Ten pounds was donated to the Victory Carnival fund by Hie guild, ami 1.0/- was donated to the same fund by the •'Bull-Pups.” junior members of the guild. A demonstration of hand-weaving and carding was given -by Mrs. Frost.

Kindergarten Worker Farewelled. Mrs. V. V. Vinsen, Wellington, who was for two years the president of the Petone Free Kindergarten committee, and for two years the secretary, was farewelled recently by the kindergarten committee at an afternoon party at the kindergarten. Mrs. Vinsen will leave shortly for the AVairaraptr, where her husband is taking up farming. The president of fire kindergarten, Mrs. J. C. Burns, spoke of llie valuable services Mrs. Vinsen hud given to the kindergarten, and presented her with a small gift as a token of appreciation. Guild Officers Elected.

Flowers aiid sweels were sold Io assist funds fur Ihe patriotic circle at the annual meeting of the Miramar branch of the Townswomen’s Guild, Inc. Officers for the coming year were elected as follows: President, Mrs. Walker; vice-presidents, Mesdnmes Bradstock and Hanna : secretary. Mrs. Christie; treasurer, Mrs. .Smith. Ketiring officers, conveners and committee members received Howers.

Gifts of Clothing. Useful garments for the Lady Galway Guild were handed in at a meeting of Hie I’ongaroa Womens Institute and acknowledgment was received from the guild for clothing already sent. A number of scarves and pullovers were completed for Air Force Gelations. A street day appeal was organized lo assist distressed families in llw recently Hooded area. Collection For Soldiers' Parcels. Al; a meeting of ll.'e Taita Women's Institute it was decided to carry on each month with the collection for soldiers’ parcels, and that three different members be responsible for the packing each month. Weekend al National Club. The National Club was crowded wiui men of the forces al the weekend, ami the helpers had a busy time entertaining and serving meals. For the National Union lea dance on Saturday. Miss I’. Hogg was hostess, ami she was assisted by Misses Betty and Sylvia McLaren, Annette Gunn. N. Joyce. K. Pears. Cushla Campbell. Beryl HardyBrown. B. Collninn. Marjorie Cook, Clifford (2), and Mrs. W. B. Parker. On Sunday Mrs. It. O. Chesney was convener of a group of helpers from the Lower Hutt area, these being Mesdames J. Vogel, J. Phillips, Wood, A. S. Morley, Haines, W. Harris, .1. Power. H. Manson, V. Farrell, and Misses M. Chesney, M. Barton ami M. Adams.
