Films Shown At Commerce Queen Party

A happy party in aid of the Commerce Queen’s campaign in the Victory Carnival was held in James Smith’s tearooms. One of the chief features of the evening was the screening of a film which showed, among other things, the departure of the first echelon of the 2nd N.Z.E.F.; modern and historic London; events of 1940, including the invasion of Norway and Belgium, and the evacuation from Dunkirk; the New Britain after 1918; the Gay Nineties; and the Navy, showing H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth, Nelson and Rodney engaged in target practice off Gibraltar. Many of the films were “first releases” in New Zealand

Mr. H. K. N. Huffan acted as operator during the screening, and was responsible for the whole effort, with the assistance of Mr. B. Smith. During the interval Mr. A. Pope auctioned a variety of articles, which realized a very satisfactory sum. The Queen of Commerce, Miss Patricia Luckie, and the Retailers’ Grecian Princess, Miss . Angela Marcells, expressed their appreciation of the manner in which the evening had been supported. In the official party with th’e Queen and Princesses were the deputy Consul-General for Greece in New Zealand, and Mrs. Garland, Mrs. Marcells, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, Mr. D. Griffen and Mr. and Mrs. Alan Ramsay. The guests included Mr. A. P. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Kersley and Miss Kersley, Mr. Findlay Gregory, Mrs. James Hunter, Mr. and Mrs. 11. Pope. Mr. and Mrs. A. Booker, Mrs. Chandler, and Misses Weaver, Loftus, Wearne, Fisher, Robinson and other members of- James, Smith’s staff. The tea-rooms were lent for the occasion by Miss Wittish.

The annual garden party of the Knox Ladies’ Guild was held at the home of Mrs. Barry, Lower Hutt. There was a large attendance of members and friends, and the garden, with its wide, tree-shaded lawn and gay flower-beds, provided an ideal setting. Mrs. Barry and Mrs. J. Barry received the guests and the drawing-room and dining-room, where tea was served, were bright with flowers from the garden. The official party comprised Mrs. Barry, the Rev. J. and Mrs. Thompson Macky, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Thomson and Mrs. J. Blair.

Meals in bed are sometimes a luxury, sometimes, unfortunately, a necessity; but, in-either ease, an attractive tray, set with pretty china is appreciated. Robin and Co., 17 Grey Street, are showing some particularly nice bed trays. They are strongly made of Mn. wood, kidney slinpo with a wicker rail and enamelled in pale shades of pink, green, primrose and blue. They stand on four short legs which, when folded up, are secured with a firm spring.— Advt.
