NAZI PRESSURE
Legation Staff At Tokio
(Received March 4, 7 p.m.) BATAVIA, March 3.
Thirty-six Dutch evacuees from Kobe arrived at Sourabaya. They stated that the German legation staff at Tokio numbered 300 and was exerting full pressure on the Japanese Government.
The evacuees described economic conditions in Japan as bad. There was a scarcity of food, the rice crop had failed, and there was a shortage of woollen clothing. Shoes were difficult to purchase, and no metal household utensils or nails could be obtained.
