Among awards of the Distinguished Flying Cross for services in the Mediterranean area is that given to Flying Officer Osborn. This officer was the captain of a heavy bomber detailed to carry out a night raid on the Catania aerodrome. After dropping bombs on the target he descended to JOO feet through intense and accurate fire and machine-gunned anti-aircraft guns and searchlights,.putting a number of them out of action.

His aircraft was struck several times by anti-aircraft shells and the petrol tanks were punctured and most of the fabric stripped from one wing. He turned. back to his base and had flown 140 miles homeward when he was compelled to come down on lhe sea. He brought the aircraft down close to a naval vessel. One of his crew had been wounded, and Osborn supported him in the water for half an hour till they were rescued.

This officer has carried out 30 operations against Germany and Italy.
