IN LOVELY SETTING

Victoria League's Garden Party Well Attended There could be no more delightful setting for a garden party than the extensive and lovely grounds at the home of Mrs. W. E. Herbert, The Terrace, where the Wellington branch of the Victoria League held a garden party yesterday. Tin? weather was not altogether ideal for an out-of-doors gathering, but a large number of members and friends attended anil were rewarded with a most enjoyable afternoon spent in the garden, where conditions were almost ideal. Sloping terraces and tall trees gave protection from the wind ami induced guests to make a leisurely tour of the grounds, with their terraced walks, rock gardens, lawns, Hower beds and woodland paths. Mrs. J. A. Doctor, president of the Wellington branch, ami Mrs. .Herbert, whose kindness in lending her home and grounds was much appreciated, welcomed the visitors. Lady Dalton, Tanganyika, who is visiting the Dominion with her husband, Sir Liewlynn Dalton, was a guest of honour. She is a member of the league in South Africa. In the garden, a group of dancers, in costume, gave several numbers. They made a charming picture performing on the wide lawns and were watched from the surrounding seats and from the many terraced paths above, by guests, for whom chairs had been provided. Miss Molly Cook arranged the dances and took part, lit them, together with the Misses Nancy Gillespie, Olga Miller, Barbara Basham and Dorothy Buck. A programme of musical items was relayed’ throughout the grounds, adding considerably to people's enjoyment as they strolled about. Specially admired were the colourful beds of Howers and the sloping banks of blooming plants in the rockeries. .Many made a round “tour” that embraced a hillside of natural hush which offsets the cultivated area of the garden. Here rustic paths, tall fern trees, a stream and curved bridges added a 'sylvan touch. Tea Out-of-Doors. On the piazza, in front of the dining room, small tables, gaily covered with check cloths, were set out for tea. Flowering bushes of hydrangeas, growing in tubs, Hanked the approach to this part of the garden, and with the tall enclosing hedges made a cosy retreat where all could enjoy tea away from the wind. Indoors lovely arrangements of Howers were seen in the reception hall and in the dining room, where Lady Dalton was entertained at afternoon tea by Mrs. Herbert and Mrs. Doctor. Hydrangeas and cactus dahlias, wore prettily arranged on the polished table, set with its lace mats, where the tea was served.
