Gooc|s Obtained By False Pretences PRISONER WARNED Found guilty of obtaining two bales of stockingette valued at £l5O, by false pretences, Anthony Hoggart, aged 2G. merchant, Wellington, was admitted to 12 months* probation by Mr. Justice Johnson in the Supreme Court, Wellington, yesterday afternoon. Hoggart was also ordered Io pay the costs of the prosecution, £9/11/6. His Honour said that he granted him probation solely on the jury's recommendation. ami he had grave doubts whether Hoggart was the type of man who would benefit by probation. "Your demeanour in tile witness' box leads me io believe that, unless you can be bi ought to realize the folly of the path you have been pursuing, you will get into further trouble." added his Honour. "I have very grave doubts indeed about you.” He warned Hoggart that a further lapse would lead him to imprisonment. A plea for leniency on Hoggart's behalf was made by Mr. G. Joseph, who said that the young man had entered business as an indent, agent on his own account, and had been led into temptation when be found himself in financial difficulties. If he was allowed probation, Hoggart had a chance of getting a job as a driver, and would earn sufficient to keep himself.
