THEFT AND RECEIVING
200 Gallons Of Petrol Involved
TWO MEN CONVICTED
Charges dealing with the theft and receiving of approximately 200 gallons of petrol resulted in George Leonard Clark, aged 46. and Bert. Alexander Davies, aged 20, being convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within the next six months by .Mr. Stout, S.M.. in the Magistrates' Court. Wellington, yesterday. Clark admitted stealing the petrol, valued at £2l/13/4, the property of his employer, the Shell Oil Company, and Davies admitted receiving it, knowing it to have been stolen. It was the first time either of the men had been itefore the Court.
Mr. J. A. Scott, for the two accused, said the offences were essentially a product of the times and but for the petrol restrictions neither man would be in the dock. Officials at the Shell Oil Company could not tell exactly how much petrol they had lost, said Mr. Scott, for there were unknown quantities lost by leakage. Clark had paid bis employers £25. There was no suggestion that they were trading in benzine.
Because accused were aware that they were breaking the law the magistrate refused to suppress their names.
