NELSON CARNIVAL
Proceeds For Patriotic
Purposes That he had assisted in the organization of a radio appeal in connexion with the Nelson City Queen Carnival was reported by Mr. J. Abel, Dominion organizer of the £1,000,000 All Purposes Patriotic Appeal, when he returned to Wellington this week. The queens represented the Army, Navy and Air Force, and the appeal, which was confined Io the city and nearby districts, resulted in the raising of £4212 between 7.45 p.m. and midnight.
This result, Air. Abel said, was outstanding. The organization of the appeal had functioned perfectly. Up to 3 p.m. ou Tuesday the three queeus had paid in more than £5OOO for the past six weeks. To this had to be added the result of the radio appeal, and it now seemed clear that when the contest ended on Saturday it would help considerably toward making Nelson Province’s quota of £30,000 secure.
The mayor of Westport and the representatives of the local patriotic committee had been in Nelson for the weekend and had set themselves the aim of raising £6OOO by a queen carnival. The Buller district was part of the Nelson patriotic province, aud when this effort was added to that of Nelson City it would easily fill the provincial quota.
