CITIZENS’ TICKET

Party Politics Opposed

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS

A “Citizens’ Ticket” of candidates pledged to oppose the domination of civic affairs by party politics is to be put forward by the Greater Wellington Ratepayers’ and -Citizens’ Election Committee in the forthcoming local bodies election campaign. At a meeting of the committee this week plans were approved for the initial steps being taken in the organiza-

tion of the campaign. It was decided that a citizens ticket composed of candidates who -would be pledged to oppose party politics dominating civic affairs would be selected, and this list of names would be placed before electors at an early date. Before such a ticket could be finalized, stated the chairman, Mr. H. H. Miller, certain formalities would require the attention of candidates and of the committee supporting them. For instance -there were questions of vital interest affecting ratepayers and rentpayers, and an election platform must be agreed upon whereby these vital interests would be protected. Every candidate desiring the support of the ratepayers and Citizens’ Election Committee would bo expected to conform to a non-party platform which would have for its objective the safeguarding of the widespread interests referred to. The “Citizens’ Ticket” would contain names of candidates who would regard their stewardship to Hie citizens of Wellington as of paramount importance.
