NEW CATHEDRAL
Good Response Toward Building Fund OVER £40,000 DONATED In all Anglican churches in the Wellington diocese offerings tomorrow WiU go to the Cathedral Building Fund. Iu July, 1937, synod decided to .mark New Zealand’s centennial by building a cathedral in Wellington and by establishing a Bishop’s fighting fund, or a central fund for general diocesan needs. For the cathedral £200,000 was required and for the fighting fund £lOO,OOO. When war broke out in September, 1939, it was decided that, because of other urgent calls, it would be improper to pursue the cathedral appeal with vigour. It was .not abandoned, however, and the hope was expressed that promises of contributions would be fulfilled.
Recently the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, expressed gratification at the way in which people, had not only honoured their promises but also made now donations. The actual cash received for the cathedral fund as at January 18 last was £40,603/8/6, an increase since October, 1939, of £9774/7/8. The fighting fund in the same period has grown from £5992/3/6 to £7446/19/10, an increase of £1454/16/4. In addition to the cash actually received, there are promises of contributions for the cathedral fund totalling £19,027/1/5, and tor the fighting fund £6601/18/7. These promises bring the cathedral fund to £59,630/9/11 and the fighting fund to £14,0-18/18/5, making a grand total of £7.3,679/8/4.
Bishop Holland will preach tomorrow' niol'iiing iu St. Luke’s Church, Wadestown.
