AT TAUHERENIKAU

Wairarapa Jubilee Cup

FORM AND PROSPECTS

(By

The Watcher.)

With the exception of the Pioneer Handicap, good fields are engaged for ’he opening day of the Wairarapa meeting at Tauherenikau. The feature event, the Wairarapa Jubilee Cup, has drawn a useful lot of a dozen, and should be a good contest. The going will be firm and fast and betting win and place. There is a large field in the Waiohine Stakes and on form the best backed are likely to be Callcardine, The Monarch and the Metonymy—Vivid Night bracket. In the Pioneer Handicap, unless Kentucky unexpectedly returns from Auckland, Autolite will touch a short price. The Woodville winner, Te Ore, might be the favourite in the Russell Highweight, but Namesake and The Monarch also look good prospects. In the Wairarapa Cup Blaek Inroad may not be a certain starter, as he was galloped on at Awapuni. He will also have to improve upon his displays there, but provided he is paraded it may be taken that there is nothing wrong with him. Little Kobin, Gay Mimic, biglow, White Rajah, Boldstep and Gay box are all worthy of support on their recent form.

There is a large field in the Nursery, and post positions will have some bearing on the result. The Whipper’s double success at Awapuni will earn him solid support if be runs. Drake’s Drum might go well ou the more turning track, but outside The Whippet, Manawatu form points to Monetary and Dungloe, wita Imperium likely to improve shortly. Good beginners like Teacony and Cheerful Lady should be prominent in the Wharekaka Hack, and Synthetic is also a strong possibility. . White Rajah, Boldstep and Harina should all run well in the Wardell Handicap and Cheerful Lady may be a possible lightweight.

On form Counter and Piastre stand out in the Tawaha Hack, and Sanction might do better over the longer journey, as he is a slow beginner. The following horses may be supported in their engagements: —

Waiohine Stakes.—Callcardine, The Monarch and Metonymy—Vivid Night bracket. Pioneer Handicap. Autolite. Russell Highweight. —le Ore, Namesake and The Monarch. Wairarapa Jubilee Cup—Siglow, Synthetic and Teacony. Wardell Handicap.—Boldstep, V bite Raiah and Harina. , Tawaha Hack. —Counter, Piastre and Sanction. The card is:—

English Racing. The Jockey Club’s cancellation ot the 1941 racing fixtures does not mean the abandonment of racing next year. On the contrary, the Racing Calendar, has published a list of substitute races, these include the Derby with £2OOO prize money, plus added amounts; the St. Leger, £1500; Oaks Stakes, and the Iwo Thousand Guineas, each of £1000; the One Thousand Guineas, of £700; the Ascot Gold Cup, £2OOO and a gold cup valued at £2OO. The Jockey Clubs senior steward, Cord Harewood, explained that a modified programme wan arranged because it was not considered to the general advantage to hold racecourse executives to expensive programmes which might be beyond their menus to carry out. It was also not desirable to cancel racing altogether if war conditions permit a continuance, because of th*' despondency which would lie caused among all concerned in the sport for their livelihood.
