In the race for gentlemen riders, Doctor Defoe, Waimutu, Hokumai, and Parekura mav find most support. There should be an excellent contest for the Marton Cup. On Manawatu form The Buzzer. Du Manner, Dark Eagle, and Dynasty will all be supported, and a fresh horse in Globe Trotter must be highly regarded. Laughing Song and Charles Edward are possible lightweights. The Railway looks like Night Eruption, after her consistent running at Awapuni, but fresh horses like Chary and Giandora should run well. Hasten did not show up at Manawatu, but back to hack class is a prospect for the New Year Handicap, and Last Acre, a fresh horse, must be bard. Gold Bridge and Talents also are form possibilities. In the concluding event Distress Signal, the topweight, ran poorly at Manawatu, but he may do better here, and Miss Leighon was a winner at Waipukurau. Colerica won on the track last start, and should again be prominent, and Gemara may return to form.

The five-year-old Ned Worthy, who won the Auckland Jubilee Trotting Cup at Epsom, was bred in Southland, being by Worthy Bond from First Water, by Harold Rothschild from Red Diamond. Worthy Bond was imported from America and was for a time at the Mardella Stud, Otahuhu. Ned Worthy showed good form as a three-year-old, winning the Winton Juvenile Stakes and the Wyndham Juvenile Stakes. Last year he won the Wainui Handicap at Hutt Park, and, although he did not win again,_ finished the year with five seconds to his credit, lie opened his winning account this season in the Speedway Handicap at Addington in August, and followed by scoring in the Seaview Handicap at New Brighton. Lae?t month at Addington Ned Worthy won the Victoria Handicap in 4.22. The success iie achieved at Auckland was bis most important, his owner, .Mr. H. Hunter, receiving £9lO, and a gold cup valued at £lOO. Ned Worthy’s record is seven firsts and six seconds) in 28 races, his earnings totalling £2130, exclusive of the gold cup. Commenting on the race, W. J. Doyle, who drove Ned Worthy, stated that the horse was always going kindly, and he felt confident of success a good way from home. “It was my job to keep my advantage on rhe rails throughout, and I had just the horse to do it,” he said. “When I eased the pace m the second half-mile, I was surprised no one attempted to go faster, but I would not have surrendered the lead in any case. After passing the mile and a half I knew Ned Worthy would take a power of beating, and he raced right up to my expectations. He was! turned out in splendid condition by R. W. Townley.”
