Centennial Tournament In Timaru BRILLIANT FINAL TO MEN’S DOUBLES (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TIMARU, January 3. The South Island centennial tennis championships are nearing the final stages. The weather today was again perfect. ’ The final of the women’s singles produced steady tennis. Miss Dora Miller, Qamaru, who is ranked second for New Zealand, had a hard fight to dispose of Miss 'Thelma Poole, ranked number one for Canterbury. Miss Miller took the first set easily, but Miss Poole shortened her game in the second, scoring brilliant•ly at the net. Miss Miller never let tip, and greater steadiness .and accuracy won her the title. Brilliant tennis was seen in the final of the men’s championship doubles, Brown and Angas prevailing over Pattinson and Penfold, after a hard-fought match. The first set. which went to Brown and Angus, 9-7, took a good deal out of the players, but they continued to treat the crowd to a great display. Pattinson and Penfold showed better combination in the second set, being deadly at blie net. They fell away at this stage, and dropped the next two sets and the match. The men’s singles fiuml, tomorrow, between A. D. Brown and C. Angas, is likely to produce sparkling tennis. Results: — Men's Singles. Quarterfinals; C. Angas (Canterbury) beat M. Souter (Canterbury), 6-4. 6-0; A. D. Brown (Canterbury) boat: B. Souter (Canterbury), 6-2, 6-2; R. Pattineon (Canterbury) bent P. Burning (South Canterbury), 6-1, 6-3; C. Penfold (Canterbury) beat W. Smith (Otago). 2-0, 6-4. 6-3. Semifinals: Angas beat Penfold. 6-0, 6-2; Brown beat Pattinson. 6-2, 5-7, 6-2. Women’s Singles. Semifinals: Miss D. Miller (North 'Otago) beat, Mrs. Hatherley (Canterbury), 6-2, 6-3; Miss T. Poole (Canterbury) beat Miss K. Armstrong, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. Final: Miss Miller boat Miss Poole, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Men's .Doubles, Semifinals; Brown and Angas heat Watson and Morris. 6-0, 6-4; Pattinson and Penfold bent C'orieh and Burning, 6-o. 6-2. Most matches in the Waikato tennis tournament concluded today, Miss Margaret Beverley retained the sjngles title, beating Miss C. Buckley, 6-3, 6-0. Misses Margaret and Nessie Beverley retained the doubles title, defeating Misses C. Buckley and B. Potter, 10- 6-2. In the men’s final J. Roach beat D. B. Livingstone, 4-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
