LAUGHING LASS TAKES ALDWORTH STAKES

Marton Final Day

MR. T. A. DUNCAN’S RUN

OF SUCCESS

By Telegraph.—Fkom The Watcher. MARTON, January 2. The summer meeting ot the Marton Jockey Club concluded today in fine weather. The feature of the meeting was the success of Mr. T. A. Duncan, whose horses won seven races, six of them trained by L. G. Morris at Awapuni. Today the principal event, the Aidworth Stakes, was won by Laughing Lass, aud the stable also secured' the double when Ecstatic won the sprint.' The Rangitikei Hack Cup was won by an outsider in Dynasty, who paid the best dividend of the meeting. There was a good attendance, but the totalizator again showed a decrease, the figures for the day being £16,022/10/-, compared .with £lB.Sol on the second day last year. The total for the meeting was £38.395/10/-. as against £45.663, a decrease of £7267/10/-. The track was in good order and fast. When Gold Tray fell in the hurdle race the rider. B. Cosford. was removed in the ambulance to St. Catherine's Hospital. Marton, with head injuries. He was examined by Dr. J. R. Macneil, honorary medical officer to the jockey club, and it was ascertained that he had a fracture of the base of the skull. He was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital later in the afternoon. . , Following the dead-heat in the Ladies Necklace? the ? respective owners, Messrs. E. M. Ryder (Haupongi) and J. F. Walker (Joe Louis), decided ownership of the trophy by a toss of a coin. Mr. Ryder won, thus securing both the trophies at the meeting. An inquiry into the falls of Alchemic and Dainty Sue in the Marton Cup on the first day revealed that it was entirely accidental, being caused by Alchemic breaking a leg in the running and falling, Daintv Sue falling over him. Alchemic's rider. Tl. Stewart, is still ill hospital, and Taltersall, rider of Dainty Sue, is suffering from bruising. Exciting Dead-heat. The first day's dividend payers Haupongi and Joe' Louis staged a desperate finish in the necklace, for gentlemen riders the pair being locked together over the last furlong and dead-heating on the post. Haupongi again went to the front earlv, but Joe Louis ran a waiting race. They were well clear of the others. Easy for Wings of Song. With only three opponents, Wings of Song was a t a very cramped price in the Junction Plate. She ran to the front from the start and was never extended to win by a big margin. Tnlentu finished better than her stablemate Nationalist for second money after the latter had again shown pare in the middle stages. High Peer Improves. Giving a much improved display of fast, clean jumping. High Peer went tn the front at the end of half a mile in tile hurdle race and never afterward looked like losing. Limbohm. a fair way back early, ran up fast from the five furlongs and looked likely when he was just in behind High Peer two fences from home, but when the test came High Peer more than held his own. Golden Ridge completed the course without showing any signs of running oft but was always about a furlong in the rear. Gold Tray, after a display of reckless jumping, crashed at the last fence. Apprentices’ Race. ( The stablemates, Royal Sign, owned by Mr. T. A. Duncan, and Kotua, owned by iiis son. Mr. J. 11. T. Duncan, staged a' keen finish Io the apprentices’ race. Itoyul Sign began well, and made the pace with Kincoru and Kotua run .up at rhe eml of a furlong in behind-1111(1 challenged in 1:110 straight. Royal Sign hung on well and was just able to stall off Kotua. BronzeyLnss finished better than the others for third, followed by Vadanoe. Kincora. Hasten, and La Coquette. Laughing Lass Sticks On. Laughing Lass scored her first win beyond a mile in the Aldworth Stakes. She got a perfect run in behind the pacemaker Old Surrey, with Play On outside her. and in the straight. when Old Surrey tired, Laughing Lass drew ahead. She bad to be ridden out to hold off Play On. but: the latter never really looked like getting her. Old Surrey and Aurora’s Star were next, Igidy Montana running last all the way after losing some ground at the start. Play On ran a much better race than on the first day in the Marton Cup. End-to-End Win. Ecstatic led ail the way to win the Telegraph Handicap. She was challenged in the straight by Russian Ballet, hut while she had to be ridden out. she never looked in real danger of being caught. The favourite. Duncannon, was slowest of the five runners to move, but he was handy on the turn, aud put in a brief dab on the rails in the straight, finally weakening to a moderate third, with Solaria fourth. Ecstatic gave the stable of L. G. Morris his fourth- winner of the day. and his sixth for the meeting. Dynasty Surprises. Hunting Lore, a hot order for the Hack Cup, again bad to put up with second place, after having every chance. He was in behind the leaders, Segra, Thrasos, and Ohere Arnie to the straight, and then got a beautiful run to the front on the fence, but in t»pite of this advantage he was unable to stall off the late challenge of Dynasty. Dynasty, who was only eighth in demand, and paid more than a score, was responsible for a solid performance, as he was last for the

first five furlongs, and at the finish he outstayed his opponents. He also got a good run through on the rails, and actually came up on the inside of Hunting Lore in the straight. Coli'bri was third, and had she been kept back a little longer instead of going up on the outside of the leaders down the back and round the home turn, she would have been much harder to beat. Caution. Israel, and le Oriko were best of the others. Favourite Succeeds. Gold Chase, favourite for the concluding hack scurry, began best, and won all the way, giving nothing a chance to get near him in the straight. Filetto just boat Pretty Lass for second, with The Smiler. Scandal and Kaalooa the best of the others. Details Of The Racing LADIES' NECKLACE, of £lO5. including trophy valued at £lO.
