TE HAI BEATS NOTIUM

Stratford Final Day

GAY SETON SCORES

Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, January 2. After several showers early this morning the weather cleared for the second day of the Stratford Raring Club's meeting today, ami there was again a large crowd present. The rain did not affect the track, which was in great order, l ie sum of £22,692/10/- was handled on the totalizator, making £49,681 for the meeting, as against £56,730 last year, a decrease of £7049. Lady Jim’s Hurdles. Ridden with the utmost confidence, the ex-hunter, Lady Jim, won Makura Hurdles very comfortably. Centaurus made the early running and held a commanding lead from Prirnax clear of Bay Dawn and Lady Jim, along the back, hut blundered and lost his rider at the secondlast fence, leaving Primak in front ot Lady Jim. Coining fast the pair rose on terms at the final obstacle, but Lady Jim ran on too strongly for the first day s winner, who just held on to beat Disturbed by a neck. Bay Dawn was a poor fourth. Had he stood up Centaurus might have proved troublesomeBidens .Surprises. Bidens brought off a surprise win in the Cardiff Hack, paying more than a score on the win machine. Silver Gift began smartly to show the way along the back and into the straight from Ripple, Alahaina, Carmody and Bidens. Inside the last furlong Mahaina put in a strong claim on the inside and Bideus came fast on the outside, and the judge decided in favour of Bidens by a bead from Silver Gift, with Mahaina a neck away. Ripple, was fourth ; then came Young Charles and Carmody. Favourite Runs Off. The win favourite. Saxon Tor, created a minor sensation entering the straight in the Ngaere Handicap when lie made for the outside rail when three lengths clear. Gay Seton and Brazen Bold, who had attended him early, wore then left in front, and Gay Seton held off a late challenge from Lexden to score at remunerative odds. Brazen Bold was only a neck behind Lexden and Tosh was fourth, attended by Liekein and Fiancee. Had he kept a straight course Saxon Tor would undoubtedly have been hard to beat. Nercus Improves. Backers suffered another reverse when Nereus, with J. McLaughlin substituted for an apprentice, improved on his three previous placed performances on the circuit, to win the hack cup narrowly. Tone Mahotu and Sieglinde set the early pace, but Racecamp moved through smartly crossing the top and entered the straight clear of Tane Mahotu, with Nereus coming fast and Ramleh making a forward move from the rear. Racecamp's rider seemed to take matters a trifle easily over the concluding stages and Nereus got up to beat him on the post. Ramleh ran on solidly for third and Kilometre was fourth from Chief Lord, Tane Mahotu. Nereus was transferred to 8. Cleaver's stable, New Plymouth, after the first day’s racing. Weight Too Much For Notium. Notiuni made another game effort to repeat his first day’s s-uecess in the Malone Memorial, but he found the task of conceding the consistent Te Hai a stone and a half too great. Bronze Step acted as the pacemaker in the early stages from Te Hai and Eastern Heir, with Ned Cuttie and Notium fairly well back. Te Hai joined Bronze .Step approaching the straight, -and held her measure al tlie"d'istiince...where Notium momentarily appeared dangerous. but Te Hai showed no signs of stopping, and scored comfortably. Bronze Step was only a neck behind Notium.. Eastern Heir and Ned Cuttie finished well back. Stencil Wins Well. Stencil, a small but speedy half-sister Io Royal Artist, by Rulanut. won the Electric Juvenile decisively. Radio Cull was left at. the post. Lucky Lulu jumped out two lengths clear of Ringling anil Stencil, bnl was steadied entering Hu straight, allowing Ringling and Stencil to t.fike charge. Stencil hit the front ai the disitiincc, and though Alcxeclia challenged strongly, she was still half a length behind at the poet. Ringling was a length further back, clear of Lucky Lulu. Dead-Heat in Highweiglit. In a great finish for the Toko High weight, the judge was unable to separate I lie first day’s winner. Prince Rangi, am) Te Hai. winner of the principal event earlier in the d-ny. Es-tro led a bunched lot, including Te Hai. Gay Seton, Tosh. Cle.-'sainor wide out and Prince Rangi. till ‘ nearing the s’tra-ight, when Te Hai moved n.p to take clnirge, and Prince Rangi ran into third pJai'e ahead of Gay Seton. Clessanior and Tosh. To Hai and Prince Rangi singled the-inselves out in the run home, rind a doml-lient resulted. Tosh was two lengths away, a bead in front of Gay Scion, and next Io finis:: were Clessanior and Sunny Downs. Gold Dale AU the Way. Back in hack company. Gold Daic easily made amends for his ill-luck or. the opening day by winning the Kaponga Handicap from end to end. The Viniis three-year-old isj a brilliant galloper, tor whom a bright future is predicted. White Foam and Miss Valerie were the closest to Gold Dale entering the straight, bur both weakened, and Vai Pere came from last at the turn to cut Liberal's Mint, who was always handy, out of second money. White Foam was fourth, ahead of Miss Valerie. Vai Pere may have been unlucky. Details Of The Racing Ry Telegraph—Fi'ess Association. MAKURA HURDLES, of VISU.
