An advance of fully 2/- a 1001 b. was shown for fat cattle. at Stortford Lodge today, when a yarding of 140 stationbred and 30 Jersey sorts met with an exceptionally keen demand. The selling was brisk throughout, all prices showing an 'improvement. Passings were few. The yarding included a good sprinkling of quality pens, but there was an absence of prime sorts. No heavy ox beef was on offer, the bullocks penned being light to mediumweight sorts, which ranged from £ll to £l3. averaging fully 38/- a 1001 b. An attractive entry of choice baby beef averaged /]%>/- and would hang up at about 4751 b. Heifer beef averaged about 40/- a 1001 b. Only a limited selection was on offer, the market being topped by an attractive entry of Shorthorns, which made £ll/12/-. Medium pens brought £8 to- £9/5/-, light £7 to £7/10/-, and unfinished £5/10/- to £6. . Few of the cows showed quality and finish. The best entries brought fully 35/- a 1001 b., and rough sorts showing age sold well at 28/a 1001 b. Jersey cows sold to £6/2/6, being well above schedule. The offering of store cattle was small, the yarding of only 100 head, consisting of females. Good / inquiry was shown for 'fattening cows, which brought £5/9/-. Cows with calves realized £5/14/-, small grown yearling A.A. heifers £2/7/-, and forward young bullocks £9/15/-. With a yarding below normal requirements, 250 head, fat sheep values were well in the vendors’ favour. Several of the entries penned were spring lambs, which sold well above the works schedule. I leavy prime early shorn ewes brought 20/2.' and other pens, lighter finished, from 17/- to 18/-. Unshorn ewes of only fair quality brought' 18/10. Mixed sex Down cross two-tooths made from 17/4 to 19/4; average two-tooth wethers 18/4; wethers rather hard in condition 21/9; unshorn wethers 27/9; well-bred Romney lambs, splendidly finished and averaging more than 401 b., 27/7; Down cross pens, well finished, 20/- to 23/9. Lambs were dearer than last week because of butchers buying for-the Christmas trade. The offering of 100 head of store sheep was the smallest yarding for many years. The main entry was a draft of 83 early shorn nicely grown two-tooth wethers in forward condition, which sold at 17/11.
