Council Surely the Wellington Cricket Association or any other like body could devise a crest of its owu incorporating something indicative of Wellington without using the city coat-of-arms, said the mayor, Mr. Hislop, at last night’s Wellington City Council meeting, referring to the request of the Wellington Cricket. Association to use the city coat-of-arms on the caps and blazers of representative cricketers.

Or. M. F. Luckle, deputy-mayor, expressed disagreement with the .mayor. He said that cricket and football .in New Zealand were purely amateur games and It was felt an honour to represent the province or city. As a rule 10 of the 11 members of the Wellington representative cricket team belonged to the city and the side was in effect representative of the city. He could not understand the objection raised by the mayor, particularly when permission to use the coat-of-arms had been sold for exhibition purposes. He moved an amendment that cricket representatives in I’lunket Shield matches be allowed' to have the city coat-of-arms on their caps and blazers. Cr. T. Forsyth supported Cr. Luckie, stating that as he understood the council could not prevent the use of the coat-of-arms by other bodies it would be a gracious gesture to allow the present application. ’The amendment, was defeated, and permission was not granted.
