JOHNSTON’S HILL

Deputation To Council

A joint deputation from the Wellington Beautifying Association and the Karori Progressive Association waited on the Wellington City Council hist night in reference to the acquisition of Johnston’s Hill, Karori.

The principal representation made was to ask that on completion of the purchase of the hill as a public domain, the council dedicate to the scheme that part of Karori cemetery which appeared unlit for burial purposes, thus linking up the hill and Wilton’s Bush. . It. was stated, that the council had agreed to give £1250 and the Government £5OO, conditional on £750 being raised by public subscription. This had been done.

The mayor, Mr Hislop, congratulated the associations on the success attained, their vigorous prosecution of the campaign and .the public support secured. There were several matters raised by the deputation which would require investigation, but these were not such as to impede the carrying out of the general idea, he said..' Captain S. Holm, Wellington Beautifying Society president, Mr. H. L. P. Dyett, president of the Karori Progressive Association, Mr. H. S. B. Fletcher, chairman of the association’s joint committee, and Mr. G. F. Penlington, comprised the deputation. The council referred the matters raised to the city solicitor.
