LETTERS FROM TOP OF TOWER

Special Exhibition Postmark

Letters postmarked with a drawing of Centennial Tower, and the words “New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, ] 840-1940: Posted at the top of the Tower,” are becoming familiar in homes throughout New Zealand, as a popular method of sending greetings from Exhibition visitors. At the top of the tower a special post-box has been placed, 175 feet above the ground, and is cleared daily at 3.30 p.m. All letters posted there are specially postmarked at the Exhibition Post Office in the Government Court. The box, which was to have been put up at the start of the Exhibition, was not actually installed till recently, but already crowds of people are making use of it. The special postmark makes the letter an attractive memento of the visit.

The postmaster at the Exhibition said yesterday that visitors should remember to leave at least two clear inches of space on the left-hand side of their envelopes for the stamp. So far 10,000 persons have climbed Centennial Tower since the Exhibition opened. On fine days and evenings—such as last evening—it is a very popular vantage-point, the fairyland _of lights which transform the Exhibition and its approaches after dusk making a splendid sight from the tower top. First supplies of the Centennial stamp issue at the Exhibition are stated to have sold out quickly, the demand being keen. The post office is being extensively used, both by people stationed permanently at the Exhibition and by visitors.
