AMBULANCE DANCE

Voluntary Workers Praised

The Hutt Valley Railway Ambulance Division held a wind-up social and dance in the dining-hall recently, whet: more than 300 dancers attended. Mr. W. J. .Smith was the master of ceremonies.

During the evening Mr. C. A. Strong, vice-president of the workshops social committee, spoke appreciatively of lite voluntary work of the division not only in connexion with the railway but in wider fields. The Hutt Valley Ambulance Division had manned all sports grounds east of the Hutt River from Eastbourne to Upper Hutt during the winter months, said Mr. Strong, and had treated more, than 500 cases on the grounds during 1939 and more than 9000 other cases. In addition members attended the Hutt Valley centennial carnival and the Lower Hutt Municipal Band queen carnival, and more than 60 had volunteered at their own expense for ambulance duty at the Centennial Exhibition. Apart from sports duties, members, on request, attend other gatherings. Mr. Strong proposed a vote of thanks for the services of the division, which was carried with acclamation. He then presented the fojlowing awards for tiie year: Avoca Cup, Privates J. F. Dawson, A. E. Green. C. K. C. Pickett and S. W. G. Rees; Seif Help Cup, Privates C. 11. Stanley, 11. W. Christie, J. E, Ord and W. J. Smith.

Mr. W. Surrell, a representative of the comniandery, pleaded the cause of the national centennial baby carnival, which is being sponsored by the Order of St. John, and as a result of which it is hoped to raise £50,000 to further the work of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The divisional superintendent, Mr. R. C. Horwell, also spoke briefly of the work of the ambulance. The committee responsible for the evening was Messrs. R. C. Horwell, A. B. Gray, A. J. Greenfield, A. J. Hoss (secretary), 11. Chappell, E. R. Menzies, R. McMullen, T. Pincock, C. M. Cathro, L. G. Turner, 11. P. Wood, R. L. Evans, A. G. Butterfield and W. J. P. Smith.
