CHRISTMAS PARTY
League For The Hard Of Hearing A bright Christmas party to mark the end of a year's activities was held last night by the Wellington branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing. For the occasion, the rooms of the English Speaking Union were festooned with multicoloured streamers and scarlet wall plaques, a sharp contrast being pro vided by a large bowl of blue larkspur as' the central decorative motif. The many guests were received by Miss M. Eggleton, teacher of the lipreading class, who was wearing a gown of jade lace. A varied pro gramme had been arranged by the social committee. Two talented young dancers, Pamela Walker (tap dance) and Charles Petherick (eccentric dance), contributed popular items. Some amusing competitions were conducted by Mr. A. E. Boyes, master of ceremonies.
During the evening Dr. William Macdonald, president of the league, presented Ute certificates to members of the first-aid class. In congratulating the recipients, Dr. Macdonald stressed the necessity for a knowledge of first aid, not only in war time but in civil life also. The successful students were Mesdames A. Nicholson. M. Burgess, L. Cook, A. Brown, E. Stead, Misses' Mavis Eggleton, E. Ataek, C. Smith, N. Mayo, J. Fonseca, and Mr. I. Auld.
Unfortunately, central heating prevented Father Christmas from using the traditional means of entrance, but the arrival of Mr. J. Hutchinson, in red. peaked cloak and snowy beard, through the curtained doors, was equally welcome. A delicious buffet supper marked the end of a pleasant evening.
