Pioneer Club Members Return From Abroad
Members who have recently returned from abroad were the guests of honour on Friday when the Pioneer Club held an afternoon to welcome them home.
Mrs. J. A. Doctor, who had arrived at Wellington the preceding day after ten months abroad, and Miss Maddever, who was in England attending the conference of the Associated Countrywomen of the World, were welcomed by the president, Miss Amy Kane, and both responded by giving a brief account of their travels. Mrs. Doctor described specially a three weeks’ tour of the less known islands of the Dutch East Indies, during which time she had not met another English-speaking woman. This- was the only period during the trip when they were not in the midst of some crisis. Another visitor was Mrs. Perry, Pennsylvania, U.S.A., who spoke briefly of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs in America. She was an officer of the Pennsylvania Federation for some years. She referred to the Convention of the International Council of Women at Washington, D.C., in 1925, saying she had met there the New Zealand delegation of which Miss Kane had been the leader. Shoulder sprays were presented to the guests of honour, and during the afternoon the singing circle, gave several glees. Afternoon tea was then served and all present enjoyed talking with the guests.
